Garlic, Lettuce and Spinach!

These pics were taken Sunday May 10th 2009. The garlic that I planted is starting to sprout - 54 plants in total in a 9 x 6 grid. The lettuce and spinach in the greenhouse are growing quickly - I have thinned them out a bit but am leaving a few extra to harvest as baby greens after they develop some more. I planted some Sweet Salad Basil and Parsley and English Thyme in spots between lettuce plants. The whole planted area has been mulched with coconut pith (byproduct of coir production) - a sustainable alternative to peat. It has a consistency similar to coarse coffee grounds, This medium has a great water and nutrient holding capacity while also allowing good drainage and airflow the root zone. It is also produced in a way to ensure that it is weed-free - so a good choice for a mulch!
